[edit] Other Scientific Names
- Brachygobius xanthozona, Gobius xanthozona, Hypogymnogobius xanthozona, Hypogymnogobius xanthozonus
[edit] Sexing
- Very difficult to sex visually and challenging to breed in captivity.
[edit] Tank compatibility
- Best kept in a peaceful brackish community tank, though tolerates full freshwater better than most Brachygobius species. Do not keep with larger predatory fish due the Goby's size. They are known to nibble long fins, so only keep with short-finned fish.
[edit] Diet
- Will mainly accept live or frozen food and can be fussy. Feed with small snails, bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia. May be weaned onto flake food.
[edit] Feeding regime
- Feed once or twice a day.
[edit] Environment Specifics
- Although these is much controversey about whether these fish are freshwater or brackish, they originate from freshwater streams, sometimes travelling towards the delta, where they encounter saltier water. The tank should be decorated with bogwood, rocks and caves. Does not appreciate a strong current.
[edit] Behaviour
- Can be territorial towards their own species.
[edit] Identification
- Often the fish found in the pet trade are not true xanthozonus, but in fact Brachygobius doriae, Brachygobius nunus, or Brachygobius sabanus.
- This fish cn be predominantly identified with its clear black/yellow uninterrupted stripes.
- The body of this little fish is elongated and round. The base colour of the xanthozonus is mustard yellow, with 4 vertical black bands, the first runs over the fishes head near the eye. The next two bands cover the body and slightly on the fins, the final band ends at the start of the caudal fin. The black fades as the fish ages.
