Cycled - meaning an aquarium tank that has gone through the nitrogen cycle and contains nitrifying bacteria which absorbs the harmful ammonia and nitrite toxins given off by aquatic animals and converts them into (relatively) harmless nitrate.
- People first starting out on keeping aquatic animals very often do not read up on this fundamental first procedure and often kill or seriously harm their pets within a few days of owning it.
