Identification
- Closely resembles juveniles of Cheilinus fasciatus and Epibulus insidiator. Since they have broadly overlapping characteristics, colour pattern is the only reliable distinguishing character. The body of young adults is grayish-brown, becoming reddish brown on mid-side and ventrally on some specimens. The head has narrow, diagonal pale bands radiating from the top of the head; the iris of the eye is bluish with reddish inner rim and an upper and lower streak of pale yellow. There is a large black spot covering more than half of pelvic fin.
