Identification

Closely resembles juveniles of Cheilinus fasciatus and Epibulus insidiator. Since they have broadly overlapping characteristics, colour pattern is the only reliable distinguishing character. The body of young adults is grayish-brown, becoming reddish brown on mid-side and ventrally on some specimens. The head has narrow, diagonal pale bands radiating from the top of the head; the iris of the eye is bluish with reddish inner rim and an upper and lower streak of pale yellow. There is a large black spot covering more than half of pelvic fin.
