[edit] Alternative names
- Elephant Ear Gourami
[edit] Sexing
- The male has pointed anal and dorsal fins, these are more rounded in the female.
[edit] Tank compatibility
- These are exceptionally large fish and should only be kept with other similar sized or large robust fish such as large Cyprinids.
[edit] Diet
- Will eat plants, fruits and insects such as crickets, but readily accepts pelleted foods once it is adapted to aquarium life.
[edit] Feeding regime
- Feed once or twice a day.
[edit] Environment Specifics
- This fish requires an enormous tank, much larger than most domestic tanks, really a minimum of 10ft long. This tank will have to be very well filtered but not too strong a current. Tank furniture can include large rocks and large pieces of bogwood. This fish will eat live plants.
[edit] Behaviour
- A large active mid-top swimming fish that is generally peaceful.
[edit] Identification
- Unlikely to be confused with the more often seen Osphronemus goramy, this Gourami has a dark spot just above the rear of the anal fin and, unique among the Gouramis and indeed anabantoids, has prominent external teeth. Sometimes, but not always, this fish also has large red patches on its flanks.
