[edit] Sexing

Males are larger and have a "filamented" dorsal fin, an elongated spike on their dorsal fin. They also develop small white spots around their nose when they're spawning.

[edit] Hybrids

Hybrids between P. filamentosus and Puntius arulius has been produced back in 1970s. The hybrids are fertile, unlike most other Puntius crosses, which results in hybrid males only and are infertile.

[edit] Tank compatibility

A large fish, best in large communities who don't mind living with very active fish, such as the Giant Danio. These fish like to be in groups of 5 or more.

[edit] Diet

Not a fussy eater, most foods accepted, including bloodworm and brine shrimp.

[edit] Feeding regime

Twice a day.

[edit] Environment Specifics

Laterally long spacious tank, minimum 4ft, with lots of swimming room.

[edit] Behaviour

Very active fish, can get boisterous during spawning.

[edit] Identification

Typical barb in shape, large iridescent green/blue/silver scales, with a large spot on the flanks towards the tail. Tail is a scissor shape and tipped with black and red bands. Males have an extended dorsal spike.
