Sexing

Male is larger and colours are more vibrant than females.

Tank compatibility

Generally spends time on the substrate, and is not the most active fish.

Diet

Accepts most meaty foods including Cichlid flake and pellet foods, frozen brine shrimp, bloodworm and daphnia.

Feeding regime

Once or twice a day, making sure not to overfeed.

Environment Specifics

These are shelldwelling Cichlids and should be kept in a well filtered tank decorated with sandy substrate and plenty of empty snail shells.

Behaviour

Aggressive to other species, especially when on a rich meaty diet of foods like bloodworm. Should be kept in male/female pairs, and you will need a large tank if you want to keep more than one pair, and even then a single male may try to dominate all and kill off subordinate males.

Identification

These are attractive small cichlids with large mouth and eyes and a broad dorsal fin, they are chocolate brown (varying in shades) in colour with a paler belly with iridescent spots across the body and fins.
