Sexing

Has not been determined. There's been speculated that the degree of cirri (hairiness) is a help of determining the sex, but there is no real evidence this is correct.

Tank compatibility

Best kept in species tanks with no other fish. Will eat fish and attack any invertebrates. May leave top-dwelling fast-swimming fish alone, but risky.

Diet

Feed mussels, earthworms, shrimp, bloodworms, crayfish, snails. Live food and frozen food should be accepted.

Feeding regime

Feed when it's belly is flat again. When young feed daily, when mature feed every 2/3 days.

Environment specifics

Appreciates a Sandy substrate With lots of hiding places. Sensitive to water quality issues, regular water changes are a must. Only keep in a fully cycled tank, ammonia and nitrite should be 0. They are messy eaters, over filtration is highly recommended.

Behaviour

An inactive lurker though very aggressive. This species will be hiding for most of the day. Most activity is seen around feeding time.

Identification

A dark brown Puffer with a lighter (sometimes orange) pattern. Has some of cirri (hairs) around the snout.
