Hi Catxx,

I see you busy updating our site which we thank you for.

However we like to keep it international and so I was wondering if you could, when you're in Edit mode, click on the --Cat 04:26, 18 February 2008 (CST)

{{gal|vollum1|vollum2}}

link below and fill in the volume of water you are mentioning in an article?

This way the unit of water is automatically shown in US gallons and litres.

ie

{{gal|5|7}} becomes 5-7 US gallons (18.9-26.5L)
and entering {{gal|5}} becomes 5 US gallons (18.9L).

19-26 Litres (5-7 US G.)

We can do the same with temperature and lengths too.

What do you say? :-) --Quatermass 11:23, 1 June 2007 (CDT)

I did not get permission to use the photos, you can go ahead and delete them.

OOOo isn't that clever! I'll do that in future.

Well I think so! Since I have put mostly everything I know on the site the primary task I concern myself with is making more templates like that to make editing easier. If you can think of anything else you would find useful just let me know.

When uploading images also don't forget to include copyright tags, what you have uploaded so far looks great! I love the informative pictures you put up on the betta page. Good pictures are hard to come by.

Thanks --PsiPro 13:56, 1 June 2007 (CDT)

thank you! i'm trying to stick to only photos of my fish, or ones from aquariums, so far it's just my little guys! those endlers are difficult little buggers to get pictures of! i'll try to remember to do copyright tags on future ones. how do you do that user tag by the way? - catxx

I noticed you uploaded a bunch of pictures from "Dyrego Zoo" and by "Fredrik Hagblom." If you have contacted them to obtain their permission? If you have we try to keep lists of all the sties we have permission to take data from on Current events. Currently we have permission from a few large websites to take their images, however many of them give us specific usage details requiring copyright tags etc.

If you have not contacted those people its not a big deal, just post the site you got them from and I or Quatermass will contact them about using their images. --Brian 15:43, 2 June 2007 (CDT)

the fredrik hagblom one was in current events already, thats why i uploaded them, and i think that zoo one was from somewhere else they got it from, possible from PFK somewhere, theres very few clear galaxy rasbora pictures out there, they're bloody fast little things! --Cat 15:49, 2 June 2007 (CDT)

Catxx, responding to your post on User:Quatermass's talk page. It is easy to set-up, and I do sell web hosting, my site is http://www.psihost.com/, however if your wiki is going to be GUN (free use information), I will set it up host it, and maintain (updates etc), free, you just need to get the domain name :). --Brian 18:13, 6 June 2007 (CDT)

hey brian, i've already got webspace here so that bit is covered, but thanks hehe, i quite like a challenge to set things up, and i'm a bit rubbish at playing with others anyway hehe. i do like to have someone to consult with though and you definately have your head round this wiki thing! the bits that concern me at the moment are whether my server needs to have anything specific set up on it to run, and how to prevent evil spammers flooding the thing! --82.70.42.86 06:09, 7 June 2007 (CDT)

The built in regex spam prevention has been working well for us so far. :)

The only requirement for running the mediawiki software is that you have php5 installed and most hosting companies are coming around to installing it now. --Brian 17:09, 8 June 2007 (CDT)

can't...stop...editing...wiki....O_O. started trying to get my own wiki up, but my website doesn't have php5...yet...getting that installed and then we'll see! *runs off to edit some more* --Cat 07:24, 13 June 2007 (CDT)

...busy at work today then. hehehe. --Cat 09:55, 14 June 2007 (CDT)

Heya, if your looking to move the rest of your sites too then any of our packages will work for you, all of the packages come with PHP5. If you just want to host the wiki (under an free doc etc. lisence), submit a ticket here: http://www.secure.psihost.com/support/index.php?_m=tickets&_a=submit with your domain name and I will set it up for you. --Brian 13:15, 24 June 2007 (CDT)

If you look under the "Special Pages" link on the left here, there is a "Popular Pages" link as well, this will show you which of our pages get the most traffic however if won't show you data for the surge we saw over the past few days. Special:Popularpages

Most of those pages are our oldest pages, Angel Fish, ADF, etc. And most of those are popular because we have added link on the real Wikipeida to come to this site, that has been one of our most effective marketing tools. --Brian 14:02, 6 July 2007 (CDT)

And a noble mission that is! :) --146.201.174.244 23:22, 15 September 2007 (CDT)

Hi Catxx,

Thanks for all the hard work you're putting into the site. It doesn't go unnoticed! :-)

When you come across Spam though can you tell me and I'll add filters into the site so it can't happen again? Then I'll roll the page back.

But actually after looking at the deleted talk page in question, it doesn't look much like spam. More like idle fingers? Difficult to filter that out! :-)

Cheers.

--Quatermass 14:41, 25 September 2007 (CDT)

I have issues with boxed profile info on Tetraodon fahaka - flake foods should never be listed for puffers as
they are poor choices for these fish, more for texture than nutritional reasons. Similarly, pellets tend to
be crushed in their throats and much of the resulting powder blow out through the gills or forward through the
mouth (so are nuttritionally lost, plus unwanted addition to the bioload on the system) - the technique used by
the fish to dump shells and such. Should this info be incorporated into the feeding section? RTRJR

Well I've promoted your user rights to Sysops, giving you the same tools that Q and I have for spam fighting purposes. When you see he spammers you should now have the 'rollback' button as well as the option to wield the ban stick. Thank you so much for your help :) --Brian 12:45, 27 September 2007 (CDT)

ATM it seems that you can't :/ Can't actually edit it either.--Brian 10:00, 1 October 2007 (CDT)

It only appears when viewing the differences tab in Recent Changes, and will only appear for if you are comparing with the most recent version. For example: http://www.theaquariumwiki.com/index.php?title=Red_Fin_Pickerel&curid=3874&diff=14257&oldid=5860 It shows the current revision is by you, and has your name, talk contribs, and block button. Next to that there is the Rollback link. Clicking that will undo all of the changes you made until it finds the previous editor. I've screwed it up more then once :) so go ahead and take a crack at it just check your work. Try rolling back this page for example, it should take off my past 3 comments. --Brian 20:47, 10 October 2007 (CDT)

Wow congrats! That is quite an impressive feat. Thank you so much :) --Brian 10:11, 15 October 2007 (CDT)

Heya, I guess we can give you access to the web-stats tracking on Google Analytics so you can see what needs improvement and what people are seeing. Let me know what your Google account name is (you will need one) and I will give you access. --Brian 14:05, 13 November 2007 (CST)

Ooops go ahead and log-in here: https://www.google.com/analytics/ --Brian 19:48, 24 November 2007 (CST)

About to leave for some cave diving, remind me tomorrow if I don't do it tonight :)--Brian 06:28, 1 December 2007 (CST)

I survived, can't ask for more than that. I've made the changes to the search location. I have also fixed your path issues that the wiki was having.

URL method changed from

http://vinyl-creep.net/~vinylcr/index.php/Main_Page

to

http://vinyl-creep.net/Main_Page

Its more search engine friendly. I can change this back if you like tho. --Brian 19:07, 2 December 2007 (CST)

I love your user page! Well it made me laugh. What do you feed your tree? ;-)

--Quatermass 16:25, 5 December 2007 (CST)

If it makes you feel any better, I have no life too but I've already put everything I know on here. Now I'm just at your (plural) beck and whim to fix tech errors. --Brian 22:48, 5 December 2007 (CST)

I've go ahead and uploaded it. Since we are non-commercial we are allowed to use all of the images. When the image is uploaded it is given the correct copyright tag. Just keep an eye out because some of the images we are not allowed to do things such as edit. I would recommend reading up on the various licenses at: Creative Commons licenses. You can upload by using this: Special:ImportFreeImages. We should probably find a good way to incorporate this link into the main page. --Brian 13:53, 13 December 2007 (CST)

Nice idea. Personally I'd like an extension that allows images to be shown cropped. Very useful that would be. Oddly there isn't one.

How's your extension writing skills Brian? ;-)

--Quatermass 15:38, 13 December 2007 (CST)

200px
and
Gupp2-6666.jpg
are the same I think? Upload mistake or did you upload them both for a reason? --Brian 20:57, 18 December 2007 (CST)

Spacing - the final frontier?[edit]

Your poor wee fingers! :-)) Maybe increase the scroll distance of your mouse wheel? :-)

I prefer 2 lines gaps between headers as it's the DTP magazine designer in me. A wall of words can look 'unscalable', so I tend to pad out the headers. IMHO it looks easier on the eye with a decent dab of whitespace paint. :-)

--Quatermass 11:29, 4 January 2008 (CST)

Any particular reason you're limiting yourself to one specific species of Oto? Here in Scotland it's mostly Otocinclus macrospilus I find.

--Quatermass 05:05, 10 January 2008 (CST)

Of course, your welcome to take a take a crack at it. Its basic IF Statments.

if a == 1 then
  this
else
  that
end if

translates into:

{{#ifeq: {{{a|}}}
 | 1
 | this
 | that
}}

The {{#ifexp: just evaluates math. If you don't wanna try tell me how you want to categoirze them and I'll do it. The page is Template:Categorize --Brian 10:41, 4 February 2008 (CST)

edits[edit]

Hi Catxx,

I rolled back your edit as these pages 'Beginner FAQ-Equipment' are reproduced on condition we don't alter them. That's why they're locked.

I finished Double redirects! Jourdy288 18:50, 16 February 2008 (CST)

IP Ban[edit]

It was only for a month :) One of the big criticisms of this site is that our information is inaccurate. It annoys me when people do that, but if you feel bad for him you can unban him, I don't really mind --Brian 21:10, 16 February 2008 (CST)

Who's criticising the site? --Quatermass 11:37, 17 February 2008 (CST)

When i cruise around some forums we get traffic from some people don't like the wiki idea, they say there isn't enough reliability in the accuracy of the information. --Brian 14:56, 17 February 2008 (CST)

i've seen that too, which is fair enough. but it's up to the individual to do their research at the end of the day, hence providing genuine links on each page. that's my view on it anyway! --Cat 15:56, 18 February 2008 (CST)

And yet the web sites that do have aquarium info are 'fixed in stone', years out of date, often the personal view of the author and so in my view this can make them even more dodgy than a Wiki.
I can argue the other way. ;-)

--Quatermass 14:42, 18 February 2008 (CST)

I agree! But sadly not many others do! --Cat 15:56, 18 February 2008 (CST) I think we all probably feel that way, or we wouldn't work on this or any other project. We have wrong info every now and then (Remember the zebra danios eating ADF?) but we are usually good about editing and reading unknown peoples edits, and of course to a lesser extend eachothers. Like cat said, the most beneficial thing we provide IMHO is links to other sources.

I agree with you too Quatermass, most hobbyist sites are based less in fact and research then ours is. --Brian 16:20, 18 February 2008 (CST)

Help please?[edit]

I'm trying to work on adding Guppy to the featured articles. I'm halfway there, but a little baffled on something. Could you help?

Jourdy288 12:46, 18 February 2008 (CST)

Articles[edit]

Hi Catxx, I'm curious about these page you're classifying into Articles.
What in your view makes a item profile an article?
You've just classed Salt as an article. Does this mean other chemicals like Potassium permanganate are articles?

I just see them as Product or item profiles. :-)

Stocking a 10 Gallon Tank is a great article, good job! --Brian 10:56, 28 February 2008 (CST)

Platy Colours[edit]

Hi Cat, I decided to just send you a message this way to save them getting lost around all of the platy talk pages! We really need a link from the main page to the colours page, unless there is one and I didn't see it. I will certainly add to it...I know I keep saying it but I really don't understand this whole thing with uploading photos onto sites and copyrighting and everything so is it OK if I e-mail you photos of my platys as I get more of them?? They are really hard to get good photos of though: they move about too much! I have more than one of each type of catogory so it seems a shame not to try! Adam2307 09:31, 7 April 2008 (CDT)

Don't worry thats what I meant...on the species pages. I couldn't remember whether you had done it already or not thats all. OK I will have a go at doing it myself but it may take me a couple of weeks to get round to it...I'm a bit busy at the moment! Adam2307 13:19, 8 April 2008 (CDT)

Image Issues[edit]

Oops ImageMagick wasn't installed properly. I'm fixing it now, thank you. --Brian 11:04, 4 May 2008 (CDT)

Its triggering a security flag, whats the file name? and/or description --Brian 07:14, 27 May 2008 (CDT)

I'm very sorry. I have had clients on my back all week. I'll do it right now. --Brian 07:27, 27 May 2008 (CDT)

I had to restore the account, I can't do the transfer at work so I will do it when I get home. --Brian 08:03, 27 May 2008 (CDT)

Again very sorry. I had to restore the backup from the 1st of the month to get the infected file back. I will be able to restore the site from Sunday's data. --Brian 07:53, 28 May 2008 (CDT)

Done, thats the best I can do sorry :) I'll try to move the site asap again. --Brian 08:08, 28 May 2008 (CDT)

Fixed. Sorry again. If you still have the problem add ?action=purge to clear the cache and re-render the page. ex: http://www.vinyl-creep.net/Zliks becomes http://www.vinyl-creep.net/Zliks?action=purge --Brian 14:18, 29 May 2008 (CDT)

ummm oops :) --Brian 09:31, 17 June 2008 (CDT)

Why do you think I don't have enough room for a clown loach? I know he needs others but loaches all interact with each other across species barriers and so he will be fine with my 2 polka-dot loaches...I only think three is necesarry as the tank isn't huge and so they won't feel threatened by the space as much! With regard to the space I know he will grow huge in a few years time but I will have gone bigger by then anyway (in about another year) so that isn't a problem. Do you think I'm over stocked because I know that I am on the boundry but I' sure I can fit in another loach for the time being.

Yep :) I was editing using putty and vi when I put the search box on top and it was just to much work to delete the bottom so. So I figured it couldn't hurt. As for the Import free images link going missing, I know. But when I upgraded it to work with the newest MW version it disappeared. I was thinking about adding a link to the upload page. --Brian 12:44, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

okay. I'm trying to see how many of the fish i find when searching for Freswhater I can identify. Not a bad game but I guess I'll slow down :) --Brian 14:21, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

Alright I categorized all of my recent uploads. I'm gonna take a break now, did 6 pages of images adding. Now I'm gonna work on copying some of wikipedias info boxes as it will help get propel around a bit I think. Not to mention I found more then a few images which were of poor quality and could probably stand to be deleted as we have better images of the same species. --Brian 14:50, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

No :) Correct notation for scientific names is actually italics. The issue is that the new template {{sn| scientific name here }} automatically adds italic text marks (two apostrophes) to make sure the names are properly formatted. However... The Fish Data template doesn't do this, so when the fish data template passes the sci-name to the Template:Tl template it quadruple quotes it because the passed data already has quotes.

In short, you can fix it page by page by removing the quotes from the Fish Data section. Or you can wait for an hr or so till I upload the new functions I made that will fix it :) --Brian 22:01, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Hold off on the plants section till I finish the new template for it. That way you can do it all in one fell swoop :) When you do the salt-water fish area, don't forget specific gravity parameter since its not in most pages (depending on where you copy the template from) --Brian 14:33, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

Oops stray space. Fixed --Brian 15:23, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

Added to your site too :) --Brian 15:03, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

lol :) --Brian 15:42, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

Try not to move pages while people are working on them :) --Brian 22:22, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
