Origin

Euryhaline (capable of living in freshwater, brackish, and saltwater). From Massachusetts down to Central, and Northern South America

Sexing

Males are generally larger and more deep-bodied than the female, with larger dorsal, pelvic and anal fins.

Tank compatibility

Fairly peaceful, and are known to group

Diet

Will eat anything that fits in their mouths.

Feeding regime

Daily

Environment Specifics

A wide variety of aquariums can accommodate them, can be put in freshwater, brackish, and saltwater

Behaviour

Fairly docile.

Identification

A small fish with a thick caudal peduncle, with a short, square caudal fin. The anal fin's origin barely overlaps the trailing edge of the dorsal fin. These can be used to distinguish it from Mummichogs, which share a habitat with them.

Notes

  • These fish readily spawn without much effort, and so thus are a popular species for aquaculture.
