Sexing[edit]

Males are charcoal with a white lower face and red fin edgings, females are lighter grey.

Tank compatibility[edit]

A large robust peaceful Cichlid that can be kept with many other similar sized peaceful or semi-aggressive fish. Although they won't go out to eat smaller fish, it may still be a risk to keep them with very small fish.

Diet[edit]

An omnivorous fish that will accept pretty much anything including pellets, flake, blanched vegetables, live/frozen/jellied foods including bloodworm and shrimp and insects such as crickets and wingless fruit flies.

Feeding regime[edit]

Feed once or twice a day.

Environment specifics[edit]

These fish are pretty unfussy with water conditions and very adaptable. They do best in brackish though, alkaline and a temperature 23.9-27.2°C (75-81°F) .

Behaviour[edit]

A peaceful mouth-brooding Cichlid with plenty of character. Often bred as a food-fish.

Identification[edit]

A large oval Cichlid which iridescent grey-blue in colour, the males are dark grey, the females lighter. Males have a pronounced dished face and red edging to the fins.

Notes[edit]

This fish is notoriously prolific, and is more cold tolerant than its cousin the Nile Tilapia
