Tank compatibility

A surface dwelling fish that is predatory and should not be kept with fish that it can fit into it's mouth. Can be slightly aggressive, but has been found to be far more compatible with other fish compared to it's Asian cousins.

Diet

A good carnivorous diet is needed, not only to keep the fish healthy but also to ensure that it's colours do not fade. It has been recommended that the Black Arowana is fed with a varied diet, consisting of live foods, frozen foods (bloodworm), and meaty foods (beef heart,, chicken livers). Although they may adapt to eating pellets, it is preferable if they are not fed too often, as they are not a good source of nutrients.

Feeding regime

When young, feed every day. As these fish get older feed every other day.

Environment specifics

A very large tank is needed, because great length as well as ample turning space is needed. Tank depth is not as important. The tank should be covered to prevent the Arowana from jumping out, and the lighting shouldn't be excessively bright.

Behaviour

On occasion, this fish may be seen sitting still on the surface, but otherwise moves around quite a lot. Known for jumping at prey hanging off branches in the wild.

Identification

Not to be confused with the Silver Arowana. As the fish ages the eye bands and dark colouration are lost, leaving adult fish a darkish silvery colour. Most Black Arowanas retain a silver-blue hue in their fins. This species also grows smaller.
