Sexing
- Male is larger and colours are more vibrant than females.
Tank compatibility
- Generally spends time on the substrate, and is not the most active fish.
Diet
- Accepts most meaty foods including Cichlid flake and pellet foods, frozen brine shrimp, bloodworm and daphnia.
Feeding regime
- Once or twice a day, making sure not to overfeed.
Environment specifics
- These are shelldwelling Cichlids and should be kept in a well filtered tank decorated with sandy substrate and plenty of empty snail shells.
Behaviour
- Aggressive to other species, especially when on a rich meaty diet of foods like bloodworm. Should be kept in male/female pairs, and you will need a large tank if you want to keep more than one pair, and even then a single male may try to dominate all and kill off subordinate males.
Identification
- These are attractive small cichlids with large mouth and eyes and a broad dorsal fin, they are chocolate brown (varying in shades) in colour with a paler belly with iridescent spots across the body and fins.
