Origin[edit]

South America: Magdalena River basin in Colombia.

Sexing[edit]

This fish is difficult to sex visually, mature females may be slightly plumper than males.

Tank compatibility[edit]

A semi-aggressive fish that should not be kept with fish smaller than itself. They do best in an South American set up with fish such as Silver Dollars and Severums.

Diet[edit]

A herbivorous fish that will need a vegetarian diet including vegetable pellets and flake and blanched vegetables. Will nibble aquatic plants.

Feeding regime[edit]

Feed once or twice a day.

Environment specifics[edit]

Best kept in a large tank with some hiding places and plenty of open swimming space, with décor such as bogwood.

Behaviour[edit]

A semi-aggressive fish that will tolerate its own kind.

Identification[edit]

Headstanders are identifiable as they will swim and hover head-down in the water, giving them their common name. The Eques Headstander is mottled in colouration with a pale base colour and dark grey irregular banding. The fins are mostly translucent with some grey colouring at the bases.
