Template:Documentation subpage

Usage[edit]

Please do not subst: this template.

This template can be placed at the top of the article, at the top of one of its sections, or less obtrusively at the top of the "References" section (though see also Template:Unreferenced-end for a tag intended specifically for that third purpose).

The simplest way to add this template to an article is to copy and paste Template:Tlx at the top of the article.

This template has two optional fields.

The first permits the user to specify what needs to be cited. For instance, if the entire article needs to be cited, a user would enter Template:Tlx; but should the user wish to be more specific on which section of the article needs to be cited, then the user could enter Template:Tlx. Leaving the parameter undefined is acceptable, as it will print out the default text "article or section."

The second field is a date parameter, entered as "date=monthname year". Adding this sorts the article into subcategories of Category:Articles lacking sources, allowing the oldest problems to be identified and dealt with first. If the date parameter is omitted, a bot will add it later.

Note that order does not matter with respect to the above optional parameters. Both Template:Tlx and Template:Tlx will produce the same result.

This template will categorise tagged articles into Category:All articles with unsourced statements and either Category:Articles with unsourced statements or a monthly category like Category:Articles with unsourced statements since April 2024, if a date is supplied.

This template is a self-reference.

Alternative templates[edit]

There are several other templates for tagging article which lack references and / or footnotes. You may wish to consider a more specifically worded template, given the vagueness and ambiguity of this one:

References[1]\Footnotes[2] Sufficient Footnotes Insufficient Footnotes No footnotes
Sufficient References Template:N/A Template:Tl2 Template:Tl2
Insufficient References Template:Tl2 Template:Tl2 + Template:Tl2 Template:Tl2 + Template:Tl2
No References Template:Tl2
