Origin

South America: Amazon and Tocantins River basins. Also known from Guyana.

Sexing

Females appear fuller in the belly than males.

Tank compatibility

Must be kept in shoals of 10 or more fish or singly. Should only be kept in a species tank or with similar sized semi-aggressive robust fish. Certain fish like Oscars, certain Cichlids, Pacus, and Silver Dollars will do ok with this fish.

Diet

Prefers a meaty diet but will take pellet and flake as well as live/frozen food such as earthworms, shrimp, bloodworm and other insect larvae.

Feeding regime

Feed once or twice a day.

Environment Specifics

Must be kept in large spacious tanks with excellent filtration and a tight fitting lid. Can be kept in planted tanks, but prefer open swimming space.

Behaviour

A predatory fish that if not kept in a large enough tank will attack other fish and eat scales and eyes.

Identification

A medium-sized elongated, laterally compressed fish with a forked caudal fin. The body is yellow-silver with a yellow to green iridescence and a dark stripe runs from the gill cover to the caudal peduncle. The lower parts of the body are dull yellow and is marked with two large black spots; one near the base of the dorsal fin, and the other at the caudal peduncle. The fins are translucent except for the red base of the dorsal fin and first red rays of the anal fin.
