Origin

Central America: Atlantic slope of Guatemala and Belize.

Sexing

Mature males are larger than females. They can be tricky to visually sex, mature males should also have a deeper body with more elongated dorsal and anal fins. Males will also be more territorial than females.

Tank compatibility

These are territorial Cichlids so are best either kept alone/in a bonded pair or to be kept with similar sized robust tank mates the tank should be well over 568-757 Litres (150-200 US G.), especially if other species of Cichlid are considered. In a suitably large-sized tank they can be kept with fast swimming Characins or large robust catfish.

Diet

A fairly unfussy fish that will accept most things including high quality Cichlid pellets, live/frozen food and blanched vegetables.

Feeding regime

Feed once or twice a day.

Environment Specifics

As with many large Cichlids, the Chisel-Tooth Cichlid requires a very large tank for a pair. The tank should be spacious with excellent filtration. Décor is preferred to be predominantly rocky with plenty of caves and hiding places with some branchy bogwood also.

Behaviour

A large territorial Cichlid.

Identification

A large oval-shaped Cichlid which is pale olive-green in colour with a pale cream belly and some blue iridescence on the scales and fins. It has 5-6 vertical dark broken bands from the mid-section of its body to the caudal peduncle.
