Origin

Euryhaline (capable of living in freshwater, brackish, and saltwater), but rarely enter freshwater habitats compared to Mummichog. Endemic to the Eastern Atlantic, from New Hampshire to Florida, and the Northern Gulf of Mexico

Sexing

Males, and juveniles are lined with vertical bars. When females sexually mature, their bars develop into horizontal ones, although htey will still retain two vertical ones at the caudal peduncle.

Tank compatibility

Fairly peaceful, and are known to group like their close kin the Mummichogs.

Diet

Will eat anything that fits in their mouths.

Feeding regime

Daily

Environment Specifics

A wide variety of aquariums can accommodate them (see origin), so it's advisable to set it up as the same salinity as they were from, and acclimate if you'd like them in an aquarium with different salinity.

Behaviour

Fairly docile.

Identification

A small dimorphic (see sexing) grey fish with darker grey bars along the body.
